INTRODUCTION

The 46XBR4 LCD TV replaced the 46XBR2 in summer of 2007 as Sony’s newest latest and greatest visual display. One of the key differences over the XBR2 is the advance to a faster 120hz refresh rate and the resultant decrease in motion lag during fast motion scenes. The pixels remain the super HD signal 1080p.

PICTURE: 92/100

We lowered the rating on this LCD TV a scant .5. This is due only to the fact that it is a larger display and thus shows slightly more artifacts. As well, the definciencies in dark shadow detail are magnified the larger the screen size.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS: 96/100

VALUE: 84/100

As mentioned in other articles, it's just hard to justify extra expense for 1080p vs. 1080i (720p). To get the superb picture and functionality of this LCD television a person is going to pony up an extra 25 to 30%. It’s a great TV with a stunning 3 dimensional picture, excellent functionality throughout, great scaling technology, not to mention the knock out looks. But it is pricey at around $2999 for a 46” LCD. The couple of drawbacks – decreased black levels when viewing from off angle off angle (which in turn decreases contrast ratio), and dark matter detail – are common for LCD TVs.

OVERALL RATING (WITH PICTURE DOUBLE-WEIGHTED): 91/100*

Rating scale from 70 (denoting poorest quality) to 100 (signifying the very best quality). A rating in the 60s for any particular category of a product review indicates a serious defect which causes the product not to operate properly. Picture quality is double-weighted in the Overall Rating Score calculation.
