34 Billion LEDs to be produced in 2009, up 300% from 2008
With LED lights becoming more popular as the backlighting method for LCD panels LED production is seeing a substantial increase in 2009. Approximately 8 billion LEDs were produced in 2008 for TV backlights, the expected LED output in 2009 for the same purpose will be around 34 billion, that's an increase of 300%. Projections for the future show that the number of LEDs for LCD backlighting will exceed 368 million, 25 times more than the 2008 LED output.
Possible LCD Panel Price Increase
LCD panel makers in Taiwan are reporting a glass shortage that may cause prices for LCD panels to rise due to the supply being unable to meet current demand. Taiwan is one of the largest manufacturing areas for LCD panels and the glass shortage could cuase the cost of the panels to rise around 2.5%. This small increase may not show up in end user pricing but if the glass shortage continues or gets worse then TV pricing may rise a bit until the demand for glass supply is met.
Panasonic Announces 85" Plasma
Looking for something to cover the size gap between their 60" plasmas and the massive (and massively expensive) 103" panels, Panasonic has announced an 85" plasma to be released in the fall. It will be a 1080p panel with a stated contrast ratio of 40,000:1. Using their new NeoPDP panel technology will allow Panasonic to get the depth of the super sixed plasma under 4 inches.

Last Year at Marienbad (Criterion Collection)
Not just a defining work of the French New Wave but one of the great, lasting mysteries of modern art, Alain Resnais’ epochal visual poem has been puzzling appreciative viewers for decades. A surreal fever dream, or perhaps a nightmare, Last Year at Marienbad (L’année dernière à Marienbad), written by the radical master of the New Novel, Alain Robbe-Grillet, gorgeously fuses the past with the present in telling its ambiguous tale of a man and a woman (Giorgio Albertazzi and Delphine Seyrig) who may or may not have met a year ago, perhaps at the very same cathedral-like, mirror-bedecked château they now find themselves wandering. Unforgettable in both its confounding details (gilded ceilings, diabolical parlor games, a loaded gun) and haunting scope, Resnais’ investigation into the nature of memory is disturbing, romantic, and maybe even a ghost story.
Tokyo Sonata
The latest film from Kiyoshi Kurosawa the hugely acclaimed Japanese director famous for his groundbreaking, existential horror films such as Cure and Kairo [Pulse] set Cannes alight this year with a surprising change of pace to, that staple of Japanese cinema, the family drama. When Ryuhei Sasaki (played by Teruyuki Kagawa) is unceremoniously dumped from his safe company job, his family's happy, humdrum life is put at risk. Unwilling to accept the shame of unemployment, the loyal salaryman decides not to tell anyone, instead leaving home each morning in suit and tie with briefcase, spending his days searching for work and lining up for soup with the homeless. Outstanding performances; serene, elegant direction; and Kurosawa's trademark chills are evident as he ratchets up the unsettling atmosphere and the grim hopelessness of Sasaki's unemployment.
Waltz with Bashir
Waltz with Bashir presents an intriguing riddle: is a documentary still a documentary if it's animated? Taking over where fact-based animations like Waking Life and Chicago 10 left off, Israel’s Ari Folman tries to wrap his head around 1982's Lebanon War (the title refers to Lebanese leader Bashir Gemayel). Why do disturbing dreams plague his former army colleagues, while he remembers nothing? Folman meets with nine of them to find out. As they speak, animators recreate their experiences, but instead of rotoscoping or video-capture, Folman first shot his film on video and then assembled an animated version from the resulting storyboards. This graphic-novel approach suits their strange, surrealistic stories and parallels the work of Black Hole's Charles Burns, who tends to walk on the shadowy side.

Digital TV Switch
On Friday June 12th, 2009 the federally mandated switch from analog to digital broadcasts seemed to go smoothly. Cable and satellite users were unaffected by the change and most antenna users had seen the myriad advertisements announcing the change and offering tips on how to get a coupon for a converter box. Volunteers even helped set up the equipment for people who couldn't handle the setup themselves. TV stations reported calls about loss of signal but there was none of the panic suspected by some.

Ghostbusters
Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis wrote the script, but Bill Murray gets all the best lines and moments in this 1984 comedy directed by Ivan Reitman (Meatballs). The three comics, plus Ernie Hudson, play the New York City-based team that provides supernatural pest control, and Sigourney Weaver is the love interest possessed by an ancient demon. Reitman and company are full of original ideas about hobgoblins--who knew they could "slime" people with green plasma goo?--but hovering above the plot is Murray's patented ironic view of all the action. Still a lot of fun, and an obvious model for sci-fi comedies such as Men in Black.

Dr. Strangelove
Arguably the greatest black comedy ever made, Stanley Kubrick's cold-war classic is the ultimate satire of the nuclear age. Dr. Strangelove is a perfect spoof of political and military insanity, beginning when General Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden), a maniacal warrior obsessed with "the purity of precious bodily fluids," mounts his singular campaign against Communism by ordering a squadron of B-52 bombers to attack the Soviet Union. The Soviets counter the threat with a so- called "Doomsday Device," and the world hangs in the balance while the U.S. president (Peter Sellers) engages in hilarious hot-line negotiations with his Soviet counterpart. Sellers also plays a British military attaché and the mad bomb-maker Dr. Strangelove; George C. Scott is outrageously frantic as General Buck Turgidson, whose presidential advice consists mainly of panic and statistics about "acceptable losses." With dialogue ("You can't fight here! This is the war room!") and images (Slim Pickens's character riding the bomb to oblivion) that have become a part of our cultural vocabulary, Kubrick's film regularly appears on critics' lists of the all-time best.
